The propulsion plant of a vessel and management of the engineering department is the responsibility of the Engineering Officers. Engineering officers' licenses are issued by grade. To obtain a United States Coast Guard license as a Third Assistant Engineer (upper Level, the applicant must complete several requirements as outlined in the licensing documents. Some of these requirements include; service in an engine room as oiler, water tender, or Jr. Engineer; or graduate from an approved course of studies.
