JCAHPO's three core levels of certification offer a progressive career ladder for ophthalmic medical personnel who seek growth in their profession. Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) is the Entry Level certification. Each level of core certification has prerequisite eligibility requirements and an examination process. OMP may progress from one level of certification to the next. Formal training or work experience and examination can also serve as an entry point to certification at any level of the core levels.

- The certification has an education level of an Associates of Arts or Associates of Sciences degree or higher, but has a work experience requirement of less than 2 years of work experience.
- The certification has a work experience requirement of more than 2 years but does not require a two-year Associates of Arts or Associates of Sciences degree.
- This certification is accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA).
- This certification is related to military occupational specialties.
