The American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Pediatrics offer dual certification in internal medicine and pediatrics. Effective July 1, 2007, candidates for dual certification must receive training in ACGME-accredited combined internal medicine/pediatrics programs.
Training initiated in a program approved by ABIM and ABP prior to July 1, 2007, will be accepted for certification by ABIM. Residents beginning training after July 1, 2007, must receive training in an ACGME-accredited program. A list of accredited combined internal medicine/pediatrics programs can be found on the ACGME website.
To meet eligibility requirements for dual certification, the resident must satisfactorily complete 48 months of combined education, and clinical competence in both specialties must be verified by the directors of both programs. The certifying examination cannot be taken until all required years in both specialties are satisfactorily completed.
