DESCRIPTION OF OCCUPATION: A Marriage and Family Therapist provides individual, marital, and family counseling services to adults and children, to assist clients to identify personal and interactive problems, and to achieve effective personal, marital, and family development and adjustment. REQUIREMENTS FOR LICENSING: Practicum & Experience requirements: Practicum - Complete a 1 year practicum within the master's or doctoral degree program, with at least 300 supervised client contact hours. Post-Master's Experience - Complete 1,000 hours of direct marriage and family therapy experience and 200 hours of clinical supervision in not less than 24 months. Education requirements: 1) Master's or doctoral degree from an accredited educational institution in marriage and family therapy or an allied field related to the practice of mental health counseling. 2) Minimum of 9 graduate semester hours or 12 graduate quarter hours in each of the following areas: a) Marriage and family studies; b) Marriage and family therapy; and c) Human development; AND 3) Minimum of 3 graduate semester hours or 4 graduate quarter hours in each of the following areas: a) Ethical and professional studies; and b) Research. EXAMINATIONS: National Marital and Family Therapy (NMFT) exam. FEES: In 2022, pay $126 (application $50, license $76, compliance resolution fund $50). In 2023, pay $396 (application $50, license $76, compliance resolution fund $150, 2/3 renewal $170). OTHER: There were 493 licenses currently active as of February 24, 2022. ~ revised 11/21
